Rules for feeding currants with potato peels

Red and black currants are the favorite berry of the inhabitants of the northern regions of Russia. Currant berries can be eaten fresh, you can cook fruit drinks and compotes, make jam, use as a filling for pies and pancakes. Currant grows well in harsh conditions, however, even such an unpretentious plant should be periodically provided with additional nutrition. Experienced gardeners consider potato peelings to be one of the most effective fertilizers for this crop.

Properties

Potato skins are rich in starch, glucose, potassium, magnesium, iron, fluorine and other useful elements. Their quantity can even compete with some purchased mixtures for plant fertilizer. Almost any crop can be fed with cleanings, but currants respond especially well to this fertilizer. Consider the main advantages of dressing from potato skins.

  • Whole-decomposed cleanings provide the soil with the substances that are required for the active growth of the shrub.
  • Not only the fertility of the land is increasing, but also its structure is improving. The decomposed peel makes the soil loose and light, so this fertilizer is often used for silty, clay and peaty soils.
  • This is an absolutely safe top dressing. It is non-toxic, unlike purchased chemical mixtures, so the gardener does not have to worry about his health, as well as the development of currants.
  • Potato skins begin to act on the plant quickly.This is an organic fertilizer that is processed by bacteria in the soil, and then transfers all its beneficial properties to the root system in the shortest possible time.
  • Unlike other natural remedies, potato skins do not affect the overgrowth of nearby weeds.
  • This top dressing can be applied at all stages of plant development, and can also be used not only for currants, but also for other crops.
  • This is not only an effective fertilizer, but also an excellent means of protection against insect pests.
  • This is more than an economical fertilizer option. It is known that most people, after peeling potatoes, send their waste to the trash can. However, a responsible summer resident will not throw away such a valuable fertilizer for currants, saving on the purchase of an expensive chemical mixture.

How to prepare fertilizer?

Thanks to such a simple and cheap (and in fact free!) fertilizer, like potato husks, the gardener gets a good harvest. Large, healthy and very sweet berries appear on a well-fed shrub. But at the same time, simple rules for preparing fertilizer should be observed.

The easiest way is to bury cleaning under the trunk. However, this method in the case of currants will not work. The fact is that this culture has a superficial root system, and therefore buried potato skins can harm young roots.

The preparation of potato peels also requires special rules, because it is important to keep them until spring. The main stages of preparation are given below.

  • Wash the cut waste thoroughly in running water.
  • Next, we place them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. This remedy will treat the skins for a fungus that often attacks potato skins.
  • We spread the washed peels on paper in a single layer and leave them in a dry, ventilated room.
  • If quick drying is necessary, it is recommended to pre-cut the peel into small pieces.
  • When the husk dries, put it in paper bags. In such containers, it will remain until spring.

It is allowed to dry potato waste on a battery or even in an oven at a temperature not exceeding 100 degrees, but in the latter case it is recommended not to completely close the oven so that there is access to oxygen, and the skins themselves must be on parchment. The crusts will dry completely in the oven in 3-4 hours.

A microwave oven is also suitable for this purpose, but it is usually difficult to guess how long it will take - it all depends on the power of the device and the thickness of the peel.

Freezing is another good way to harvest crusts. To do this, follow the following rules:

  • wash the skins well in the above solution;
  • grind the skin with a meat grinder;
  • the resulting slurry is placed in a container and left in the freezer until spring.

Fertilizer preparation begins approximately 7-10 days before currant processing. As a rule, this happens in the spring. Recipe:

  • pour the crushed husk into a bucket;
  • pour boiling water so that the water is 5 cm higher than the cleanings;
  • in this form, insist the mixture for a week.

This is the main recipe that is used to feed currants. But there are other ways to prepare an effective fertilizer that is suitable for both currants and other crops. For example, infusion:

  • pour dried or frozen potato skins with boiled water;
  • insist during the day.

The resulting infusion is used for irrigation.In addition, you can make a kind of flour from potato peels - ground peel is considered a high-quality universal fertilizer. For this:

  • prepare well-dried skins;
  • grind in a meat grinder, blender or coffee grinder;
  • we store in containers, but not for long, since the peel crushed to a crumb state is subject to decay, and is also a tasty prey for pests and pathogenic microorganisms.

How to fertilize?

The way fertilizer is applied is also important. As already noted, the currant has a superficial root system, and therefore fertilizer should not be applied directly under the bush. For this purpose, a groove is dug. Apply fertilizer in a certain way.

  • Using a cord, we make a projection of the crown of a shrub. This should be done before flowering. The circle we get is the limits of the root system.
  • We cut a groove along this line to a depth of 20 cm.
  • At the bottom we place a slurry of potato waste or ground peel and dig in.
  • We carry out the procedure annually.

It is very useful to use such a fertilizer when planting a plant. To do this, we make top dressing in the hole prepared for planting. We feed the culture every two weeks. However, in the case of currants, this method is not suitable. The fact is that with the regular decomposition of such an abundant amount of cleaning, a large amount of heat is released, and the soil may be overheated in the summer. Therefore, experienced gardeners warn that care should be taken when feeding currants with potato peels. A couple of times a season is enough.

A particularly important period in the development of currants is the appearance of ovaries. At this time, she also needs nutritious and healthy fertilizer from potato peels.

Potato infusion, the recipe of which was presented above, is recommended to be used as irrigation. It is allowed to water the plant once every two weeks.

Tips

Experienced gardeners know that potato peelings are not only an effective fertilizer for currants, but also an excellent protection against pests, the appearance of which negatively affects the crop. To prevent the adverse effects of insects, it is recommended to install potato traps as soon as the bush is planted in the ground. There are two known ways to use cleanings as a pest control agent. First way:

  • place the skins in any containers - cans, saucepans, glasses, the main thing is that the container should be without holes;
  • you can add sweet water, syrup or jam;
  • bury the containers next to the currants so that their edge is flush with the edge of the earth;
  • the next day, all that remains is to pull out the trapped insects from the trap and destroy them.

    Second method:

    • find the wire and thread it through the potato peels;
    • bury one end of the wire, and leave the other sticking out on the surface;
    • after a couple of days, dig out the bait and destroy the insects stuck to it.

    Both methods have been tested, but you should still be careful. Banks and wire can damage currant roots. For this reason, some gardeners recommend simply scattering the cleaning around the bush, and after a day, collect them together with the pests and throw them away.

    But gardeners also recommend using potato skins as part of other fertilizers for currants. For example, self-made bread top dressing is highly valued in gardening circles.

    The recipe is quite simple.

    • Pour into a large container of water, usually a barrel is used.
    • We also spread weed juicy grass, nettle, gout, crusts of stale bread, potato peelings there. The mass of bread should exceed the amount of other products. You can place the ingredients not at once, but for some time.
    • After three weeks, an effective fertilizer can be used.
    • Currant bushes are processed with the resulting mixture three times: the first time - when the ovaries are large, the second - during fruit ripening, the third time - closer to harvest.

    Most summer residents strongly do not recommend using simply decomposed fresh cleanings as fertilizer. This can lead to the following problems:

    • fresh peel will damage young tender currant roots;
    • in the summer heat, the crusts will spread a stench;
    • dry husk is a real delicacy for rodents;
    • even thin skins can germinate.

    Heed some more advice from agronomists on the rules for using potato skins as fertilizer.

    • If the cleanings were frozen during harvesting and then thawed, then they can no longer be subjected to repeated freezing.
    • As a top dressing, it makes no sense to use the peel of boiled potatoes. All useful trace elements are already lost during heat treatment.
    • Fertilizer can also be applied in winter. To do this, clean the ground around the currant bushes and cover with a film. With the accumulation of cleanings, you can dig out the snow, lay down the fertilizer and bury it again. In the spring, it is necessary to carefully dig the soil.
    • If potato skins are used as an auxiliary ingredient in the preparation of fertilizer, then they should not be mixed with ash. This is due to the fact that the peel contains nitrogen, which, under the influence of alkali, is transformed into ammonia and evaporates. Such a fertilizer will not bring much benefit.
    • If there is a compost pit on the site, then you can store potato peels for subsequent top dressing right in it.

    Potato skins are an effective fertilizer for currants of any kind. This top dressing fertilizes the black variety especially well. Properly prepared and used, the mixture will be a great helper in growing large, sweet, juicy berries.
