Currant is a unique plant that, when consumed, will help a person improve his health and make immunity stronger. But, not a single bush is immune from diseases. Diseases must be dealt with correctly, only then can you get a healthy plant with an excellent harvest.
Why does the disease appear?
Rust is a type of fungal disease that can cause great harm to a currant bush, so you should look for ways to solve this problem in advance. The most common cause of the disease is the presence of conifers near trees. Despite the fact that the currant is a picky plant, columnar rust often affects the bushes. Most often this happens in areas where a cedar or pine forest grows nearby.
After the fungal spore falls on a pine branch, it begins the process of its vital activity under its bark. In the spring, bubble-like outgrowths and rusty spots can be seen on the tree, in which spores are located. This parasite subsequently infects currant bushes.
In goblet rust, the intermediate host is sedge. On this plant, spores, which are the source of the disease, carry out the wintering period, and when the onset of heat begins to infect the berries. The spread of rust occurs with the help of the wind, which ferries them on the limbs of the insect.
The most favorable weather conditions for the development of a fungal disease is a warm and humid climate. In dry weather, rust is practically not able to develop.
Most often, rust attacks currant bushes that grow in low-lying and humid areas. The disease poses the greatest danger in areas with severe thickening and poor thinning. And also the presence of several types of pests can be attributed to the causes of rust on currants.
- Leaf aphid. Outwardly, this insect is a small black dots. It is usually found on the underside of the leaves. Aphids suck out all the juices from the plant, and yellow swellings form. As a result, the plant loses its ability to grow, survive and die.
- Spider mite. This pest is very fond of berry bushes. After settling on the leaves, the insect begins to feed on its juice, as a result of which swellings of a dark yellow color can be seen. After a while, the leaf becomes colorless and falls off.
- Currant gall. There are two types of this insect that can harm currants. In appearance, the currant gall midge is a small yellow-brown mosquito. It produces the laying of eggs in a bud, a young leaf or under the bark. As a result of the vital activity of the gall midge, the plant dies.
- powdery mildew - This is a fungal disease that affects the foliage of the currant, as well as its fruits and shoots. The area that is damaged by insects may be covered with a powdery coating. This situation leads to curling of the leaves and their drying.
Signs of defeat
If yellow leaves appear on a bush of black or red currant, then this situation should not be ignored. The most common cause of this appearance of plants is a fungal disease. In this way, the plant lets you know about the disease, gradually losing moisture, weakening, not bringing a crop. Currant rust is a fungus that infects the plant. It is of several types.
- Goblet. This type of disease is manifested by the formation of pillows in the form of glasses with a bright yellow color. After a while, the spots unite into one continuous one, and darken towards the end of summer. Leaves, berries that are not ripe, and ovaries are usually affected. Often this disease progresses in the spring and summer.
- Columnar. This type of rust manifests itself in the defeat of the upper part of the leaf, covering the green part with yellow spots. From the inside, the diseased leaf is covered with orange dots filled with spores. The disease progresses in the middle of the summer period.
