Apple tree "Ligol": description of the variety, tips for growing

Apple tree Ligol: variety description, growing tips

The Ligol apple tree was bred by Polish breeders in 1971. This is a winter-hardy plant that produces a good harvest of juicy and tasty apples. The culture was most widespread in Russia, Ukraine and at home - in Poland.

Variety Description

The frost-resistant apple tree "Ligol" is characterized by increased productivity. Fruits reach technical ripeness in autumn, the crop is harvested in late September-early October. Apples are distinguished by exceptional keeping quality and can be stored until spring. The very first fruiting begins in the third year of the plant's life in the open field, while the fruit buds are formed even before it is planted in a permanent place.

As a rule, for the first time, 4-6 kg are harvested from one tree, and subsequently the yield grows from year to year. "Ligol" is prone to periodic fruiting, so there are years when the apple tree is almost empty.

The tree is medium-sized, by the age of 10 it grows up to 3-3.5 m. The crown has a pyramidal shape of medium density. The stem is thickened, the branches grow at an angle of 60-80 degrees relative to the trunk. The apple tree is characterized by increased shoot formation, due to which the yield is usually high.

The leaf plates are elongated, saturated dark green in color, the lower part is edging. Complete fall of foliage is completed by November. Flowering begins late and lasts about 10 days. Inflorescences are white, rather large.

The variety is self-fertile, so it requires pollinating trees.Gardeners recommend planting Fuji, Golden Delicious, Vitos, Lobo, Spartan, Macintosh and others nearby. At the same time, the Ligol apple tree itself can often act as a pollinator for most other varieties, with the exception of Idared and Jonagold.

The fruits are quite weighty, the weight of each varies from 150 to 450 g, on average their weight is 300 g. The apples are round in shape, with pronounced seams on the sides. The skin is dense, smooth and slightly shiny. In most cases, it is colored yellow-green with a carmine cover, and as it ripens, red becomes predominant. Under the skin, light subcutaneous dots are visible in large numbers.

The taste properties are high - the fruits are sweet with an almost imperceptible sourness, the smell is saturated, the flesh on the cut is fine-grained, juicy, creamy or white-yellow in color. 'Ligol' tolerates transportation and storage well and is therefore often grown for commercial use.

Advantages and disadvantages

Apple tree varieties "Ligol" has both advantages and disadvantages. The benefits include:

  • good frost resistance - the tree easily tolerates frosts down to -30 degrees;
  • high yield - plants that have reached the age of 8, from each hectare can produce up to 15.5 tons of high quality fruits;
  • apples of this variety are versatile in use and can be used for eating raw, as a component of fruit salad, for making juices, compotes, purees, jams and marshmallows;
  • fruits retain their presentation for six months;
  • the culture is resistant to scab and powdery mildew;
  • pleasant taste and delicate aroma.

There are very few cons, among them - weak resistance to bacterial burns. In addition, under adverse external conditions, the plant is often affected by wood diseases. During long-term storage, apples are often affected by skin tan and subcutaneous spotting, which gives the fruit an unpleasant bitter taste.

To prevent this from happening, fruits must be stored in a cool place without access to sunlight.

Agricultural technology

If you decide to grow the Ligol apple tree, the first thing you need to know is that for the full growth and development of the plant, areas open to sunlight and fertile, well-fertilized soils are required. Partial shade is allowed, but only if it is not too extensive and not constant.

Poor and depleted soils are not suitable for Ligolu, as are areas located in arid places: in this case, the flowering dates are shifted, and sometimes the apples do not have time to ripen. The close location of groundwater is also fraught with a decrease in yield and a deterioration in the taste of apples.

That is why the preparation of a place for planting should be given special attention. At this stage, the following types of work should be carried out:

  • removal of weeds;
  • application of mineral and organic fertilizers;
  • adding humus to the soil.

It is equally important to choose the right planting material. The seedling must have a sufficiently strong root system, there should be no damage on its bark. It is necessary that there are at least 4 branches on a young plant, its height is approximately 1.5 meters, and there is a graft 10 cm from the root collar.Tip: if you want to purchase a viable seedling, buy material from specialized nurseries and not from the market, because in this case you will have no guarantee that you are buying the exact variety you want.

It is advisable to prepare a landing hole in advance, optimally - a month in advance. To do this, they dig a hole about 70x100 cm and fill it with a mixture of black soil with rotted manure, compost and peat. If soils are too heavy, sand can be added. After the pit is filled, it should be watered abundantly and solutions of urea, superphosphate and potassium nitrate should be added.

A couple of hours before planting, you should place the roots of the apple tree in a container with cool water, you can add drugs that stimulate root formation to it. Such manipulations will allow you to straighten the roots and prepare them for moving into the ground. Landing is carried out strictly vertically, optimally - to fix the young plant to the support.

The apple tree is deepened, 4-10 cm short of the root neck, after which it is covered with earth from the hole, lightly rammed and watered abundantly.

Plant care does not require special skills and conditions. Periodically, the plant needs loosening the trunk circle and weeding. These activities should begin in the spring, for this they wait for the snow cover to melt, after which the area around the stem is cleared of debris and dug up.

After each watering or heavy rain, the earth, as a rule, is covered with a cracked crust, which creates an obstacle in the way of oxygen to the root system. Therefore, after each irrigation, the land should be well loosened. This must be done at least once a month.

After harvesting, at the stage of preparing the plant for wintering, the earth is dug up and, if necessary, organic fertilizers (compost or rotted manure) are added to it. It is necessary to cut the shoots in a timely manner and form a crown. They do this twice a season: in the spring they carry out shaping pruning, and in the summer they remove the shoots that create excessive thickening. Before reaching adult size, the crown is shortened by 40-50 cm annually.

For the apple tree "Ligol" are very important regular watering, which are carried out during flowering, at the stage of fruit formation and a couple of weeks before harvesting. In dry years, additional moistening can be carried out as needed. Watering should be plentiful, but it should not be turned into a stagnant swamp either - this will inevitably lead to the death of the root system.

The plant responds well to top dressing, therefore, in early spring and late autumn, the apple tree is fertilized with organic compounds, at the stage of active growth, mineral components are introduced along with irrigation, especially the plant needs nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Keep in mind that the introduction of organic matter must be very careful, fertilizer with fresh manure or bird droppings is strictly not allowed - this leads to a burn of the roots.

Apple trees of the Ligol variety are resistant to scab and powdery mildew, however, the plant is susceptible to garden pests and other fungal diseases of the crop, which is why gardeners should carry out preventive treatments. After the snow melts, the trunk and crown are sprayed with insecticides, the same treatment can be repeated shortly before flowering begins.

In addition, in the spring it is imperative to whitewash the bole with lime, which creates effective protection for the plant from ultraviolet rays and insect pests.

Despite the frost resistance of the plant, it should be prepared for sub-zero temperatures. To do this, the ground in the near-stem circle is covered with mulch in November, most often peat or humus is used, but needles and sawdust may come up, the area is covered with agrofiber or ordinary roofing material from above.

The harvest of harvested apples is stored in wooden boxes, stacked in layers, while paper should be placed between them, which will protect the fruit from the spread of rot from one fruit to another. The storage itself should be carried out in a cellar, which must be ventilated, otherwise the fruits will quickly lose their presentation and taste properties.

Reviews of gardeners

    Apple tree varieties "Ligol" received a lot of positive feedback from most gardeners. Summarizing them, we can draw the following conclusions about the value of this variety.

    • The vast majority of gardeners note an increased yield of the variety, despite the fact that the very first harvest can be expected already 3 years after planting the plant in open ground.
    • Often, another positive fact appears in the reviews - apples can be picked a little unripe, and they reach ripeness already during storage. At the same time, they can lie, without losing their taste and nutritional value, until the onset of next spring.
    • A large number of reviews are devoted to the taste and aroma of apples, as well as the versatility of using Ligol fruits. They are good both for eating raw and for preparing winter preparations.
    • Despite the fact that "Ligol" is bred artificially and requires the obligatory presence of other pollinating plants, the yield of the variety has the highest rates.
    • As a rule, this crop is grown in whole gardens, but the plant feels great in single plantings.

    In general, the Ligol apple tree is a plant resistant to external adverse factors, which, with traditional care for all horticultural crops, gives a good harvest of juicy and fragrant fruits.
