Apple tree "Lobo": variety description and cultivation
Apple tree "Lobo" came to us from distant Canada in the last century. Even for a not too long period of time, the apple tree managed to please and fall in love with so many people. Its juicy taste cannot be confused with other varieties of apples. It is especially pleasant that these apples ripen just before the frost, when there are practically no other fruits. Of course, before you finally decide whether to plant this variety or not, you should get to know it better.
Characteristic
Apple tree "Lobo" is considered a late variety, it is also sometimes called winter. Harvested, as a rule, in the last autumn months, before the first frosts begin. This species was bred from the Macintosh variety by Canadian gardeners due to free pollination. These apple trees are suitable for many climatic zones. Experts evaluate "Lobo" as a variety with great prospects.
Apples of this variety are grown in small volumes in summer cottages and on a large scale - in large plots. As a rule, the yields from these apple trees are high every year. Lobo fruits are just suitable for eating and for juices, salads, purees, compotes.
The size of ripe fruits is quite large, and the weight is from 120 grams. The weight of one apple can sometimes reach 0.5 kg. However, such fruits can only be grown if the tree is properly cared for and if the weather conditions are favorable.
The shape of the fruit is most often rounded-conical, but there are also simply rounded fruits. Ribbing is absent, the peel is smooth. It is worth noting that the real "Lobo" has a cover with a wax coating.The color of apples in the variety is yellow-green, sometimes there is a blush in the form of stripes. Moreover, the color of the blush can be from pale marble to dark brown-red.
It should be clarified that after removing the fruits, their color may become darker, closer to burgundy or cherry. This is due to the presence of a wax coating.
If you look closely at the fetus, then subcutaneous points become visible, but there should not be too many of them. The stalk of an apple is medium in size, and there is a thickening at its tip. The funnel of an apple can be characterized as deep and sprawling, the stalk does not extend beyond it.
The ribbed fruit saucer is small. The calyx is also small, it can be either closed or half-open. The tube under the cup is of good width and medium depth, its shape resembles an inverted cone. The chambers with seeds are small, shaped like a heart.
The pulp of "Lobo" has a white color and fine granularity. The fruits are very juicy, sweet and sour at the same time. The sour taste in this variety can be explained by the high content of ascorbic acid. On average, 100 grams of apples of this variety contains almost 11 milligrams of acid. Fragrant fruits are good to eat fresh.
Under favorable conditions, apple trees show rapid growth. The first harvest can be obtained three years after planting. At first, the crown of the tree is oval, and then it gradually grows upwards. In an adult tree, the crown is wide and most often has a rounded shape. It can be thinned out due to the fact that the branches will fall. The height of the tree is average, sometimes it can reach 4 meters.
The shoots of "Lobo" are medium, they can be curved, cranked or slightly lowered in shape.The shoots are painted brown, sometimes reminiscent of the color of a cherry trunk. The nodes on the shoots are most often oval, can have different sizes, the distance between them is not too large. The leaves are oval or egg-shaped, often large, twisted at the tip, and heart-shaped at the base. The surface of the leaves has bumps and wrinkles.
Petioles of apple trees in their shape resemble maple trees with small stipules. The apples themselves, as the description of the variety shows, ripen on last year's growth, as well as on kolchatka and twigs. Flowering "Lobo" occurs in late spring. Pollinators for this variety can be apples of any of the early species. From a tree, you can collect 200-350 kilograms of apples.
Advantages and disadvantages
Like any variety, Lobo has its advantages and disadvantages.
- The most important advantage of this variety can be considered a good yield. Moreover, this figure can be equally high for several years. As the tree grows, yields only increase. Good frost tolerance makes the variety an excellent option for certain regions.
- Another positive difference between apples is the large size of ripe fruits. Only with poor care, the weight of the fruit is less than 100 grams.
- Among the advantages of the variety, it is worth noting its pleasant taste. The sweetness and sourness of such apples are harmoniously combined. Fruits differ in gentle aroma and good juiciness.
- A beautiful view of the fruit can also be considered an advantage. Ripe apples are transported well and without damage even over long distances. This helps them sell well.
- Of the significant advantages of the variety, resistance to periods of drought should also be noted. This is the merit of the small height of the trees.
There are few drawbacks to this variety, but they still exist.
- One of the most important: the fruits are not stored for more than 60-90 days. For late apple varieties, this shelf life is considered short. Also, when planting this variety, it must be taken into account that it is susceptible to various diseases, including scab and powdery mildew. Most often, tree damage occurs in too wet weather.
- During the ripening period, additional care must be taken for the trees: propping up the branches so that they do not break off under the weight of the fruit. If frosts affect apples, then they will not be stored at all.
- This variety also has such features that each person for himself will attribute to advantages or disadvantages. One of these features is that all the fruits ripen at the same time, in about seven days.
Landing
Planting the Lobo variety as a whole is not much different from planting other apple trees. Of course, just before planting, it is necessary to adequately assess the size of an adult tree. In this variety, the dimensions are most often medium, so it is advisable to plant seedlings at a distance of about three meters from each other. The rows should lag behind each other by four, and preferably five meters.
Planting of apple trees is carried out both in spring and in autumn. The soil for planting must be prepared in advance. When the first digging is done, it is important to remove weeds and various debris from the ground. Then you need to re-dig the soil with fertilizer. Fertilizers are applied in the following volume per square meter:
- humus - from 5 kg;
- peat - from 8 kg;
- potassium salt - up to 50 g;
- superphosphate - from 90 to 100 g;
- potassium sulfate - up to 40 g.
Practice shows that when planting in the autumn, it is better to leave large clods of soil and turf.In the spring months, the soil is harrowed, and by spring the tree receives excellent humus.
Soil acidity is an important indicator. For an apple tree of this variety, it is advisable to choose not too acidic soil. This indicator can be reduced by adding lime to the ground. It should be borne in mind that interaction with lime deprives humus and phosphates of useful properties. The application of these fertilizers is best done not at the same time.
A pit for an apple tree is made a month before planting. If you want to plant in the spring, then it is better to dig a hole before winter. This time is just enough for her to pass the weathering, and with the advent of spring, she rather became warm. The dimensions of the pit should be such that a seedling with a root system and fertile soil fit in it. It is desirable to place the latter at the very bottom of the pit.
In the event that the land is already fertile, then nothing can be lined. Usually a pit is made in the size of 1x1 meter. When digging a hole, it is better to put a fertile earthen layer separately, which most often comes from above. This will allow the tree to grow better. A mixture of fertilizers is placed at the very bottom, where it should take about 60 percent.
Humus, peat, ash and superphosphates can be used as a fertilizer mixture. Moreover, it is necessary to take not the freshest manure, since it may not decompose, and will kill the roots of the tree.
When the pit is ready, the seedling is planted in it and dug in with earth. After that, it is advisable to compact the earth a little around the tree. When planting, the roots, in addition to the central one, should be located at a depth of about 20 centimeters. This allows the apple tree to grow better and start bearing fruit earlier.
Care
Variety "Lobo" loves moisture, but the roots do not withstand stagnant water. This must be taken into account, and even before landing.It is important that groundwater does not come too close.
In addition to proper watering, trees constantly need top dressing, which is carried out in the spring and autumn months. The first time to fertilize an apple tree is before it begins to bloom, around April. The soil should be saturated with substances with nitrogen (root method) and nitroammophos or ammonium nitrate.
After flowering, it is better to use chicken manure, potassium sulfate and superphosphate for fertilizer. Such a mixture must be made in four buckets for each tree. It is also recommended to spray apple trees with urea, at the rate of 0.5 kg per tree. It is worth noting that urea and various minerals are needed for this variety during the period of the strongest heat.
In the autumn months, the tree needs phosphate and potassium. For this, fertilizers that are sold in stores are suitable. They are bred and used as written in the instructions. In summer, the latest fertilization time is July. This is due to the fact that the tree needs to prepare for winter.
Another important step in the care of apple trees is the prevention of disease. In order to prevent the plants from being affected by powdery mildew, they should be sprayed with Bordeaux liquid or other special substances that are sold in gardening stores.
If the disease has already begun, then for treatment it is necessary to use soda ash with soap or a composition of copper oxychloride and potassium permanganate.
Scab more often infects trees during periods of excessive moisture. For prevention, it is necessary to plant trees correctly so that they are well blown and illuminated by the sun's rays. If the disease has appeared, then it is necessary to collect and burn all fallen leaves annually. This is done to prevent the spread of fungal spores.
Also in specialized stores you can buy preparations for spraying. Use them after the tree has completely faded.
Do not forget that 'Lobo' trees cannot self-pollinate. It is necessary that other pollinating apples be planted on the site, in addition to them.
Tree pruning is carried out in spring and also in autumn. In the spring months, pruning of seedlings and young trees is carried out. In autumn, pruning should be carried out when the tree has already shed its leaves, but frosts have not yet begun. Be sure to cut off old and diseased branches. It is also desirable to remove branches growing inside the crown.
If you cut the trees correctly, then their crown will be beautiful and healthy. In addition, regular pruning ensures large fruits.
For regions with severe winters, it is recommended to insulate the trunks of apple trees. This will allow frost not to affect the trees. Also, this measure will not damage the trunks to rodents.
Reviews of gardeners
Most gardeners speak of the Lobo variety exclusively in a positive way. Everyone likes beautiful and very fragrant fruits. Even with poor care, apple trees give a good harvest. In general, the trees are unpretentious in care, they tolerate even severe frosts well.
The taste of apples is also praised by everyone, but not everyone likes the thick peel on the fruit. It is best to make juice from fruits, it turns out to be very sweet and rich. Of course, many note that diseases have to be fought regularly. However, if you constantly carry out prevention, then they can be avoided.
The apple trees of this variety of many gardeners are also pleased with the fact that they still lie longer than the declared period. Sometimes they can be stored even up to five months. Of course, there are those who are dissatisfied with the taste of the Lobo variety and how it should be looked after. But there are few such gardeners.
