Apple tree "Silver Hoof": variety description, planting and care
Apples are considered one of the most delicious and healthy fruits. Today, they can be grown in various varieties, which differ not only in the ripening time of the fruit, but also in taste. Silver Hoof apples received good reviews, they are undemanding in their care and give a high yield, so even a novice gardener can grow them.
Variety Description
"Silver Hoof" is considered a common variety of apples, which is most often found in the northern regions of the country. The summer variety of the apple tree has earned its popularity due to its resistance to cold weather and good fertility. It was bred as a result of crossing varieties such as "Snowflake" and "Rainbow", so it can fully grow in drought zones with unstable climatic conditions and, unlike other species, is less susceptible to disease. Pollination of the tree occurs during the flowering period, and its fruits, under the right conditions, are ideally stored for more than two months.
The apple tree grows as a small tree, the height of which often reaches 3 meters. The crown is small, slightly rounded and unbranched. The main characteristic of the variety is strong and strong branches that make an angle of 90 degrees with the trunk. The trunk is covered with light-colored bark with a yellowish tint, in young plantations it is reddish.
Fruiting in this species is mixed, fruit buds are divided into:
- last year's gains;
- ringlets;
- spear.
They are characterized by an oval shape, slightly pointed at the ends. Light green buds with a matte surface are attached to the branches with petioles, after which they form leaves that are serrated along the edges. As for the fruits, the apples of the "Silver Hoof" are medium in size, their weight depends on the growing conditions and the quality of the soil. If the soil is fertile, then you can collect fruits weighing more than 110 g, when planting trees on poor and depleted soils - 80 g.
The apples are round and have a thin “waxy” coating on the skin, their color is cream with a striped or blurry red blush. There are also fruits on which the blush completely covers their surface. Inside the apples, a seed heart is formed with small and open nests, seeds of medium size brown or black. The flesh of the "Silver Hoof" is characterized by a juicy structure, it can be either cream or light green.
Apples are not only tasty, but also healthy, they include the following components:
- from 10.2 to 13% sugar;
- from 12 to 17% dry matter;
- 12.5%/100 g ascorbic acid.
The fruits are versatile in use, they can be eaten fresh, as well as made into jams, juices or dried. Due to the sweet-sour taste and moderate aroma, apples make excellent compotes. The trees are usually harvested in August, but if the seedlings grow in the western and southern regions, the fruits ripen much faster. When ripe, they do not crumble from the branches and, when ripe, become slightly transparent and filled with juice.
Advantages and disadvantages
Initially, the Silver Hoof variety was bred for cultivation in the Urals, but today it has successfully "taken root" in northern Kazakhstan, Udmurtia and even western Siberia.
The popularity of this variety of apples is explained by a number of its advantages, namely:
- increased resistance to cold and frost;
- good transportability;
- early ripeness and pleasant taste of fruits;
- presentable appearance;
- versatility in use.
As for the shortcomings, they also exist. This variety requires planting pollinators in the gardens, as without them it is sterile. Apples are resistant to various diseases, but can be affected by fruit rot and scab. In addition, the level of productivity and dimensions of fruits directly depend on the quality of tree care and agricultural technology.
Summing up, we can say that the Silver Hoof is ideal for planting in all climatic zones of the country, and in order to please your family with delicious fruit dishes, it is enough to provide the apple tree with proper care, and even an amateur gardener can do it.
Landing
The yield of the "Silver Hoof", like any other varieties, is determined by the quality of the planting material. Therefore, in order to get a strong and healthy tree and be sure of its varietal "purity", it is necessary to purchase seedlings in a fruit nursery. They must be labeled with the variety, as well as the name and address of the company that grew them.
The main criterion in the selection of apple trees is the condition of the foliage and roots. In the event that defects in the form of rot lesions and other signs of damage are observed on the roots, it is better to refuse seedlings.It is impossible to acquire apple trees with drooping, dry roots, on which earthen lumps do not hold, they may be weak and will not be able to please in the future with fertility.
In addition, before planting, you need to pay attention to the foliage of the seedling, checking the plates from below and above. A quality tree is considered to be covered with leaves of a saturated shade, on which there is no plaque, holes and other signs indicating damage by pests or diseases. Also, aphids can hide under the foliage, because of it, on the planted apple tree, the leaves will begin to dry and curl, then there is no need to talk about a high yield.
If you make the right choice of planting material and provide it with good care, then already in the fourth year after planting you can count on the first fruiting, and after five to six years, you will be able to harvest a large crop of tasty and beautiful fruits.
Before purchasing a seedling, you must also decide on the place and time of planting. Silverhoof requires a well-lit area. It is best to place it in an area where there are pollinating varieties, on the windward side of a residential building. Areas with a close passage of groundwater are not recommended. If there is no other place for growing, then you will need to additionally form bulk ridges (hills).
Soil type also plays a huge role. The ideal option is breathable, slightly acidic or neutral soil, it should be dug up in advance and mineral fertilizers and organic matter must be added to the hole where the seedling is planned to be planted for better fertility. On clay soil, drainage from gravel or broken bricks will be required.It is also possible to improve the structure of the earth by using peat and sawdust from hardwoods.
"Silver Hoof" is characterized by certain planting dates. Therefore, if seedlings are planned to be planted in the fall, then this should be done from the end of September to October, and in the spring - in April. At the same time, experts recommend planting in the autumn, thanks to which the seedling takes root better and begins to fully develop in the spring. The layout of trees is simple: a distance of 5 m is made between rows, and the step between plantations should not exceed 3 m. Such a “dense” planting is possible due to the compact size of the variety.
A hole for apple trees is prepared in advance, its dimensions should be selected in such a way that the roots fit comfortably in width and depth. The standard recess has a size of 60x70 cm, but in areas with dense soil, it is made larger. It is advisable to prepare a seat a few weeks before buying trees.
Planting seedlings is carried out as follows:
- first, ash is poured into half of the pit, usually a 0.5-liter jar is consumed per place;
- then they wait a little for the soil to settle and pour the earth;
- the roots of young apple trees are well straightened and placed in a recess, sprinkled with a composition with humus.
During planting, it is important to ensure that voids do not form in the ground; for this, the seedlings are slightly shaken.
Many gardeners plant a garden in the spring, planting during this period is carried out in a similar way, but fertilizers containing chlorine, potassium salt and phosphorus are additionally poured into the soil. Each apple tree requires up to 150 g of mineral components. Upon completion of the work, the roots of the trees are finally covered with soil and carefully trample it down near the trunk circle.Then the apple tree is watered with two or three buckets of water and a peg is installed for support on the south side of the trunk.
Care
Each tree in the process of its growth and development needs proper care, and the Silver Hoof apple tree is no exception. In the spring, gardeners need to perform mandatory pruning of branches; without it, the fruits may decrease in size. Sanitary pruning allows you to form a beautiful crown, it is recommended before the start of sap flow. This procedure is carried out according to the principle of a bush pruning scheme, leaving only a few main shoots and lateral branches. The result will be a compact bush form, which will be well lit, ventilated and will positively affect the yield level.
To trim the branches, you need to use sharp and clean tools, and at the end of the work, lubricate the wounds with garden pitch. In this case, the cut should be done correctly, directing it from the branch or trunk. In addition, to ensure healthy growth, seedlings should be treated several times a season with drugs that protect them from possible disease. This is usually done before the flowering of the tree and before the formation of the first leaves.
Most often, the "Silver Hoof" is subject to scab lesions, after which brown spots appear on the ovaries, buds and leaves. The causes of this disease may be an excess of nitrogen fertilizers, wet weather, acidic soil or a dense crown.
To prevent this, summer residents need to trim the tree in a timely manner, if necessary, lime the ground (200 g of lime is required per 1 m2), spray the seedlings with a 7% solution of urea in the fall, and treat the seedlings with a 3% solution of Bordeaux mixture in the spring.
Fruit rot is much less common in a variety, but if it affects trees, then damaged fruits and branches must be destroyed so that they do not spread the disease throughout the apple tree. Rot can be avoided with the help of preventive measures in the form of spraying with copper sulfate.
An equally important point in the care is watering the trees. It is worth noting that the Silver Hoof loves moderate humidity, so its level must be constantly monitored. In a dry summer, when the formation of the ovary and flowering begins, watering is mandatory, after harvesting it can be stopped and performed only once before the onset of the first frost.
It is also good if mulching is used when caring for apple trees, it can significantly save water, as it is aimed at moistening the near-stem circle. Mulch can be in the form of humus, sawdust or peat, it is evenly covered along the diameter of the hole, and it not only retains moisture, but also protects the hole from the growth of weeds in it.
As for the fertilizer of this variety, it is recommended to carry it out from April, introducing mineral elements around the entire perimeter of the planting. Humus, urea and ammonium nitrate are ideal for Silver Hoof. During the flowering period, apple trees can be fed with potassium and superphosphate, but in summer you should be careful with fertilizers, since they cause burns of the root system in dry soil.
With proper observance of all conditions in the care, around the middle of August, you can start harvesting. At the same time, the period of fruit ripening depends not only on care, but also on the climatic conditions characteristic of each region.
Apples are recommended to be plucked from the tree in a timely manner, after which they are sorted and stored in rooms with a humidity of no more than 90%. The fruits are well stored in a wooden container at a temperature of 0 ° C, they can lie for up to 2 months without spoiling and without changing their taste.
Reviews
The universal variety of apples "Silver Hoof" managed to win the recognition of many gardeners, as it is characterized by excellent fertility. From one tree, you can collect a huge number of fruits that are suitable both for fresh consumption and for various preservation. Among the positive reviews of the owners of summer cottages, one can note the long shelf life of apples, exceeding 2 months from harvest, so they can be used in winter in baking or cook fragrant compote from them. The fruits do not dry out, retain all taste qualities and do not differ in any way from those harvested from the tree in autumn.
In addition, the variety has proven itself to be transportable, so if the orchard is large, you can also make good money selling apples by supplying them to the market. Thanks to their pleasant aroma, beautiful and even shape, they will not have competition. The advantage of the variety is that it is suitable for growing in many climatic zones, therefore it is available to everyone. Young mothers, who often cook dishes for babies from them, spoke well of apples of this variety, tender pulp and a slight sourness make them a favorite dessert.
