Apple tree varieties "Zhigulevskoe": description, planting and care
Many gardeners prefer early fruit harvests. But, as for the apple tree, late varieties are considered more valuable. Such a crop has a lot of useful qualities, is stored for a long time and is characterized by excellent taste. Despite the many advantages, planting a tree should be correct, and maintenance should be regular.
Variety Description
The Zhigulevskoye apple tree is a tree with a well-formed, strong structure. It has a large leaf, fruit and flower. You can recognize this variety by the following signs:
- round fruit;
- wide and deep saucer;
- thick stalk with medium length.
"Zhigulevskoe" produces fruits of green-yellow color, which can reach a weight of up to 200 grams. These fruits are characterized by an intense red blush and an oily coating. Many gardeners prefer this variety because of high yields and precocity. Apples have excellent commercial and consumer characteristics, so they have become a favorite for many citizens.
The taste of Zhigulevsky fruits deserves special attention. Its composition is about 90 percent water, the pulp of apples has a unique aroma, coarse-grained, creamy shade and dense skin. By consuming such a fruit, you can appreciate its sweetness, juiciness and at the same time exquisite sourness. This product is classified as low-calorie and is often used in canning.
This apple variety is not considered self-fertile, so it needs to be cross-pollinated. In addition to it, the garden should contain a few more apple trees with late and early ripening. To collect maximum yields, you should choose Anis, Antonovka or Spartak as pollinators. Pollination will be possible if the distance between the trees does not exceed fifty meters.
This apple tree belongs to medium-sized varieties, its height is about three meters. The life expectancy of the plant is approximately 40 years. In terms of yield, the tree is inferior to tall varieties, but thanks to a dense planting, this disadvantage can be compensated.
The plant of this variety has an unthickened crown, its rare branches are directed upwards. Thanks to these characteristics, the sun's rays can penetrate directly to each ripening fruit. Such a crown provides ease of maintenance and trimming of the tree. The development of the root system of the apple tree is good, but does not tolerate waterlogging.
Apple tree "Zhigulevskoe" is characterized by medium frost resistance. A tree can experience stress with a sharp temperature drop and a prolonged thaw. If the plant is provided with proper care and wrapping in frost, then it can perfectly exist in any corner of the country.
The flowering period of the variety falls on the second half of May: then you can see many large white flowers on the tree. The variety begins to bear fruit at 4-5 years of age. "Zhigulevskoye" belongs to the autumn type, so August - September is considered to be its ripening period. The fruits ripen at the same time. The crop does not fall off and finally ripens after two weeks at the end of their removal.
Each plant can bring a crop of about 250 kilograms.If the crop is properly harvested and the storage conditions are suitable for it, then the fruits can retain their appearance and taste properties for about three months.
Proper fruit picking includes simple rules:
- removal of apples should be carried out in dry weather;
- the peduncle should not be injured;
- do not remove matte plaque from fruits.
Landing
On the advice of experienced gardeners, it is necessary to plant the Zhigulevskoye apple tree in the spring, the second half of April is best suited for this. The preparation of the pit should be done in the fall, thereby it will be better enriched with oxygen.
This plant variety prefers fertile soil with low-lying groundwater and good drainage. The best option would be to choose loamy soil. In order for the tree to grow normally and the harvest to be plentiful, it needs to provide good sunlight.
When choosing a planting area, avoid shaded areas. The distance between trees should be at least four meters.
The amount of preliminary work on the territory will depend entirely on how fertile the soil is. With well-drained soil, you can do without fertilizer. The pit is dug with parameters 0.6*0.6*0.6 meters. You need to loosen the soil twenty centimeters deep and leave it for a while to ventilate.
Poor soils need fertilizer. The hole should be dug with a depth of one meter. The first layer, which is removed from the hole, is mixed with two buckets of peat, 0.3 kg of superphosphate, 0.04 kg of potassium chloride and 0.3 kg of ash. It is worth refraining from adding nitrogen-containing fertilizers, as they can harm the root system.
Before planting a seedling, it is necessary to carry out the process of preparing planting material.A young plant with exposed roots needs to be soaked in water for up to twelve hours. If the seedling has a damaged or broken root, then it must be carefully cut off, and the place should be smeared with clay mash. If the seedling is purchased with an earthen clod, then it is enough to free it from packaging.
Stages of planting a young apple tree with an open root system:
- the bottom of the hole is laid out with drainage in the form of brick fragments or coarse sand;
- two-thirds of the pit must be filled with prepared fertilized mixture;
- in the center of the pit, mount a stake to which the seedling is tied, the neck of the plant should protrude about seven centimeters above the ground;
- the root system should be straightened, sprinkled with earth and compacted;
- dig a hole around the seedling and pour a bucket of water into it;
- make mulching with peat, straw and humus.
A seedling with a closed root system is planted much easier and faster. It is placed in a pit along with an earthen clod, sprinkled with soil and watered. Apricots, pears, plums and quince can be planted not far from Zhigulevskoe, such a neighborhood will only benefit her.
Care
Any tree needs proper care. It includes a set of measures for watering, fertilizing, pruning and protection from diseases and harmful parasites.
The fruit of this variety of apples is characterized by resistance to many diseases. The most common lesions on the plant are:
- Powdery mildew. To get rid of the disease, it is necessary to treat the foliage with "Topaz" or "Soon".
- Codling moth. As a prophylaxis against this parasite, a double treatment with wormwood solution is used. Do not forget about the regular cleaning of fallen leaves.
- Various pests and parasites. To save the plant, it is necessary to carry out spring whitewashing of the trunk, as well as spraying with Karbofos. This must be done after flowering processes.
- Sunburns. As a result of this impact, cracks form on the bark, and a fungus or a harmful insect can penetrate inside. The place that is burned should be cut off and treated with garden pitch. To avoid burns, it is necessary to whitewash the trees or attach paper to exposed areas.
- Hares and mice that gnaw on the bark of an apple tree. In order to prevent this from happening in the autumn, it is necessary to close the trunks with roofing felt or spruce branches.
An important point in caring for a fruit tree is watering regularity. The volume of water should be equal to two buckets per tree. The best time for this is early morning or evening. The average frequency of watering is five, six times a month, but if the weather is rather dry, then it should be done more often.
Do not forget about the regular loosening of the soil in the root circle. Thanks to this procedure, air permeability improves near the ground. The implementation of loosening should be before watering, as this contributes to the saturation of the roots with oxygen. Also, for a thorough penetration of oxygen into the soil, you can pierce the ground with a crowbar to a depth of 0.4 meters along the territory of the apple crown.
For the first few years, a young apple tree does not need fertilizer. But in the fourth year, you need to start carefully feeding it three times a year:
- in the middle of spring, one individual needs half a kilogram of urea;
- in the summer, when the plant is in bloom, Zhigulevsky needs nitrogen fertilizers. Also, the introduction of bird droppings in liquid form has a good effect;
- when the flowering period ends, it is worth fertilizing the tree with nitrophoska.
After the end of the first month of summer, it is worth stopping fertilizing the apple tree. Be sure to take into account the degree of soil fertility. Rich soils do not need frequent fertilizing. But sandy soils and the poor especially need fertilizer.
The role of pruning is very important in the growth and development of a tree. It is able to adjust the shape of the crown, affects the size of the fetus and its sugar content.
The beginning of pruning is considered the first year of the life of an apple tree. Before the planting process, the branches should be made a little shorter. The best time for the procedure is spring. The work is done with a sharp tool.
The place where the plant was cut must be treated with garden pitch. If the branch is old, then it is lubricated on the same day, if it is young, the next day. Thanks to the pruning of branches, the following shoots are getting rid of:
- dry and sick;
- growing inside the crown;
- growing down.
In order for the plant to easily survive the winter, it must be prepared:
- hill, loosen the soil and mulch the circle around the trunk;
- treat the trunk with iron sulphate;
- wrap with roofing felt or film.
