How to grow an apple tree of the Elena variety?
Among other valuable hybrids of fruit trees bred by Belarusian breeders, there is also the well-known apple tree "Elena" to knowledgeable gardeners. This is a summer variety of juicy apples with an indescribable aroma and a wonderful sweet and sour taste. In the middle lane, this is perhaps one of the most sought-after crops, appreciated by summer residents and owners of country houses. True, to obtain a quality crop, you need to know the intricacies of growing and caring for this plant.
Variety features
Apple trees of this variety are medium-sized trees, the height of which can reach 2.5-3 meters. At the same time, the crown, which has a pyramidal shape, is considered medium-sparse, since the leaves are mainly located at the edges of the branches. By themselves, the branches with bark are pale green with a gray tint, lowered to the ground, while their ends tend upward.
The leaflets are oval, with small teeth along the edges, have a smooth outer side and a pubescent inner surface. Near the trunk, in the core of the crown, the foliage is virtually absent.
If individual ovaries take place already in the first year after planting, the plant begins to bear fruit normally from 2-3 years old, and at 5 years old it already gives stable, large yields - about 25 tons per hectare.
In early spring, at the end of April, the apple tree blooms, spreading a delicious aroma. The following characteristics are characteristic of the fruits of the hybrid:
- apples are medium in size and can weigh between 120 and 150 grams;
- the shape of the fruit is classic, rounded, and, as a rule, all fruits from one apple tree are identical;
- the main color of apples is green-gray, over it, occupying more than half of the surface, dark pink purple is poured with lighter subcutaneous dots;
- the fruits are smooth to the touch, the peel is quite dense, perfectly maintaining its shape;
- medium-hard pulp is juicy, it is white-green or pinkish.
The taste of fruit is sweet and sour with a predominance of sweetness, it is estimated at 4.8-5 points. They include fructose, vitamin C, pectins, dry sucrose, organic acids, tannins.
Valuable qualities of culture and its shortcomings
When a choice is made in favor of a particular fruit plant, it is important to take into account the different characteristics of the variety. At the same time, you need to focus not only on the taste of fruits or berries, but also on the dimensions of the crop, its susceptibility to diseases, productivity, which, of course, should be high, but not excessive. The apple tree "Elena" in this sense has its pros and cons, and you need to know them when planting a tree on your site.
Advantageous characteristics of the tree:
- the advantage of the plant is its rapid growth, maturation and precocity, due to which a full-fledged harvest is possible already in the 2nd year after planting the seedling;
- fruit buds of a tree appear annually, which, in principle, is typical for hybrids;
- the tree is compact in size, has an average crown density, which simplifies maintenance and facilitates the collection of apples;
- a valuable quality is the frost resistance of the apple tree, so it can be grown in cold regions;
- mature trees are characterized by abundant fruiting, which makes the variety commercially viable;
- of no small importance is the immunity of the plant to scab;
- apple tree "Elena" does not require cross-pollination with other crops, since the plant is bisexual, and an important mission is carried out naturally: by bees and bumblebees.
In addition, the fruits have excellent taste, beautiful and appetizing appearance.
There are some disadvantages of the variety, which are the loss of taste when the apples are overripe, the crumbling of the fruits and the extremely short shelf life: in fact, after three weeks, the fruits become insipid in taste and lose their original juiciness. That is why it is better to use them fresh, freshly plucked from the branches, or make preparations in the form of jams, marmalades or assorted berries.
Positive feedback from gardeners about the variety confirms that the culture is indispensable for areas with cold winters, especially since such apples make excellent compotes and juices, which do not even need to add sugar.
Landing: basic rules
In the middle lane, apple trees of this variety take root well and quickly begin to bring excellent yields. In colder climatic zones, for normal fruiting, you will need to choose the necessary fertilizers and regularly feed the plant.
It is best to plant an apple tree after leaf fall in the fall - this will allow the root system of the plant to develop before the upcoming cold. If work is carried out in the spring, then it is necessary to constantly monitor soil moisture.
A landing site should be selected taking into account some requirements:
- the site should be well lit;
- "Elena" prefers to coexist with young plants of its own species and not very tall trees that can shade the culture;
- soil with moderate acidity and a predominance of nitrogen compounds is suitable for planting, it is better if it is loamy chernozem;
- groundwater in the zone of the variety should lie at a depth of about 2.5 meters and deeper.
Planting takes place in the following sequence:
- a pit for a plant with dimensions of 80x80x80 cm is prepared in 1-2 weeks, the bottom is covered with rubble, pebbles, providing drainage for the root system;
- fertilize from above with a mixture of organic fertilizer (manure with humus);
- the seedling is placed in the hole, having previously removed the broken and rotten roots, straighten them, and attach the apple tree to a wooden pole;
- after instillation, 3-4 buckets of water 30-40 degrees are required for irrigation;
- at the end, the trunk circle is mulched.
Experienced gardeners recommend cutting the main trunk into two or three buds so that the side branches grow well. If there are low-growing shrubs or trees nearby, the distance between them should be large enough - up to 3 meters.
culture care
The tree needs the usual comprehensive care throughout the season, from early spring to late autumn.
Agricultural technology includes:
- regular watering 1 time in 7 days, not counting the dry time;
- when moistening the soil, the elimination of weeds is also required, loosening to access the air roots;
- the culture is characterized by the formation of an excessive number of ovaries, as a result of which there is an overload with fruits, therefore, it is necessary to thin out the flowers;
- in spring, after frost, the tree should be inspected, injured and dead branches should be cut.
Top dressing of a tree is usually carried out in the spring before the appearance of inflorescences, then during flowering and after it. At the same time, it is necessary to fertilize not only the near-trunk zone, but also the soil around at a distance of half a meter. For this, ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate and potassium sulfate are used. Saltpeter should contain up to 35% nitrogen. If the soil itself is heavy and consists mainly of clay, it will need to be diluted with coarse sand, humus, rotted manure and peat.
Sanitation for pest and disease control
Variety "Elena", in general, is resistant to various diseases, but the tree cannot be completely insured against such troubles. Comprehensively organized protection against fungal microorganisms such as powdery mildew and milky sheen will help keep the apple tree healthy and viable:
- branches damaged by powdery mildew, shoots and leaves are removed and burned in the fall;
- in the spring, before the first leaves appear, the culture is sprayed with urea;
- when forming ovaries, they are treated with sodium carbonate diluted with soap;
- in the case of bacterial root cancer, fertilizers based on phosphorus and potassium are added to the soil, growths are cut off, plants with a large area of \u200b\u200bdamage are destroyed.
The bark of an apple tree can crack over time due to the influence of sunlight, therefore, to protect against burns, it is necessary to treat the trunk with a special paint based on acrylic - this composition is absolutely harmless for wood. This procedure must be carried out in the spring. Garden pitch is also used if the plant has been damaged by fungus or rodent teeth. Against insects, you can use a solution of copper sulfate.
The main pests of the apple tree are green aphids, codling moth and hawthorn. The fight against them involves the use of "Karbofos", "Bordeaux liquid", such an insecticide as "Aktellik".In case of damage to the apple codling moth, you will first have to remove the bark, and then disinfect the trunk with Enterobacterin.
Due to the short shelf life, the Elena apple tree, in most cases, is used for harvesting and is not suitable for large-scale commercial activities, however, the variety managed to fall in love with an ordinary summer resident, due to its resistance to cold, and early abundant harvests.
