Features of pruning columnar apple trees
The pruning procedure is carried out so that the apple tree looks good, develops correctly and pleases gardeners with excellent yields. Columnar apple trees appeared relatively recently in our country, but today they have managed to gain wide popularity, they can be found in different regions. If you properly care for a tree, it will certainly delight gardeners with tasty and numerous fruits, growing compactly and occupying a minimum area. So, what is the importance of pruning for columnar apple trees - it is worth considering in more detail.
Why do you need to prune a tree?
Pruning plays an important role in the care of a variety such as a columnar apple tree. As for the features of this species, it should be noted that the formation of the crown does not occur, and apples and greens are located directly on the stem of the plant. Due to this, trees can be planted compactly, while getting the maximum amount of yield. Since there is simply no crown, pruning takes place taking into account certain nuances and does not take place in a completely standard way. There is no specific order for this procedure, everything is at the discretion of the gardener.
It is worth noting that the kidneys located at the very top cannot be categorically removed or damaged, therefore the formation of a crown is not possible. The pruning procedure involves getting rid of one-year-old shoots, due to the formation of which branches cannot develop, because they draw nutrients from the tree and they may not be enough to set fruits, as a result of which the yield will decrease.
So that young sprouts do not get mixed up with each other, they must be thinned out. This will not only increase the number of fruits, but also help the tree look neater. The columnar apple tree is a low-growing crop, which must be taken into account when caring for it. Visually, the plant looks like a poplar and resembles a pyramidal column with branches on the sides. If you refuse pruning, it can form a spreading crown and transform into a bonsai.
To form a column, side shoots that cut through in the spring must be cut off. This process will help normalize their growth and achieve the desired shape. In addition, this procedure has other advantages. For example, even if the trees are located in close proximity to each other, their branches will not tangle. And also it will help to strengthen the newly cut branches, and the unthickened crown will receive more light and nutrients.
Columnar apple trees are distinguished by the fact that they grow very weakly. This is due to the low content of growth hormones, so flower buds are formed directly on the stem of the plant. This means that the trunk must be quite strong, and the side branches prevent it from developing and getting stronger. The distance between apple trees should be about one meter.
Pruning scheme during growth
Too much pruning can harm columnar apple trees.It must be produced in order to normalize the growth of the tree and increase its fruiting, at the same time without causing damage. It should be borne in mind that shortening the central shoot is unacceptable when working with undersized plants, attention should be paid specifically to the side branches, which have the ability to grow both horizontally and vertically.
There are two ways to crop. The first involves deletion, which involves pruning only a certain section of the side branch. In the second case, we are talking about clipping, during which the entire branch is removed.
To form a tree that develops correctly in all respects, one procedure is not enough, the process stretches for several years. It is worth considering in more detail all the stages, namely:
- in the first year of a seedling's life, its trunk must be shortened and side shoots completely removed;
- in the second year, it is necessary to pinch those shoots that have grown by more than 30 centimeters, excluding the top one, which will later play the role of a trunk;
- in the third year, the branches growing on the sides are cut so that their length is no more than 40 centimeters, and the top shoot is pinched by 25 centimeters;
- the fourth year begins with thinning branches, pruning the weakest and most damaged ones;
- in the fifth year, plant growth should be limited, its maximum height should be about 3 meters;
- starting from the sixth year of the life of the apple tree, it will be necessary to carry out exclusively sanitary pruning, namely, to remove dry and damaged branches in order to allow new ones to develop and increase the level of fruiting.
As for the correct pruning, you need to start it, rising from the ground up.The cut should be made in the opposite direction from the kidney and slightly higher than it is located. When carrying out the procedure, an important point is that a pair of buds should be left on each shoot, which will stimulate the growth of branches.
Formation and care
When pruning, it is necessary to remember the basic rules that every gardener must adhere to. We must not forget that the more branches were removed, the more useful substances will go to those that remain on the tree. The process must be completed before the juice flows, otherwise it is better to postpone the procedure to autumn or the very beginning of summer.
Compliance with the stages according to each year of life will help the proper formation and development of the plant. In some cases, you can leave more than one column, but 2-3, but this may threaten with a lack of nutrition for other branches.
As for the competent conduct of the procedure, gardeners should not forget that only one-year-old shoots can be cut, and it is imperative to leave two buds on each of them. Pruning should be done annually.
The fruiting period of columnar apple trees is 5 years, after which they are pruned down to the base. Pinching is done so that the side branches receive the necessary amount of nutrients and can bear fruit.
If the winter was too severe and the top of the tree, having frozen, dried up, when the heat comes, it will give young shoots. In this case, one of them must be left, while the others are shortened.
As for the pruning scheme according to the time of year, it is carried out 4 times.
- The main procedure is done in winter. Since the tree does not have permanent branches, the lower shoots often suffer from a lack of sun.In winter, you can form those zones that will actively bear fruit, and over time they will rise up. It is also necessary to cut off weak and dry branches.
- Concerning spring pruning, it must be carried out before the juice begins to move. After that, the plant will begin to grow more actively, and young shoots will appear from the buds. In the same period, the central shoot is determined. And also with this procedure, carried out in the spring, you can cut the frozen tips of the branches, which will only benefit the tree.
- Summer it is necessary to remove those new shoots that interfere with the development of the plant. They will originate on the trunk. It should be borne in mind that gardeners do not recommend using a pruner, a simple plucking will be enough. Damage to the bark, albeit minor, will not benefit the tree, so the process requires maximum accuracy.
- And finally autumn the gardener needs to remove shoots growing vertically, as well as thin out the tree. When the fruits are already harvested, the movement of the juice will gradually stop. This period is most favorable for sanitary pruning. This means that it is necessary to remove dried, damaged and broken branches so that the plant meets the winter fully armed. After summer pruning, young shoots reappear.
When pruning columnar apple trees, use only sharp tools that will not leave unnecessary damage. After the procedure, the sections are processed using a garden pitch. If you remove the green shoots located on the trunk, this will only benefit the plant. The center column will be stronger and will be able to form more fruits. Branches that are more than 3-4 years old are removed during pruning.
Tree care should be carried out, focusing on the requirements of each particular variety. For more active processes of flowering and fruit development, it is required to observe the distance between the rows. In the case of a columnar apple tree, it should not exceed one and a half meters. You can cut the top only when new shoots begin to appear from the top frozen shoot. In other cases, the upper bud on the trunk is necessary in order to normalize the growth of the tree. The cutting angle of others should not exceed 30 degrees. If the shoot is located close to the horizontal branch, it is not recommended to remove it.
Within 5 years, it is necessary to carry out pruning according to the following principle: of the two processes that have appeared on a vertical branch, one must be removed and the other left, it is on it that the fruits will appear in the future. You can form a crown in another way, but it is a little more complicated than the previous one. Pinching the plant is added to pruning. Even if this procedure is done with the usual type of apple tree, in the future it will become columnar. You can also achieve the opposite effect.
Despite the fact that flowers are actively formed on the branches and trunk of a tree in spring, this is not a guarantee that there will be as many fruits. Since the plant is stunted, it does not have enough nutrients to provide all the apples. Therefore, work with buds should also be systematized. The very first year is marked by the appearance of a huge number of buds. All of them are subject to removal.
In the next season, a few flowers will need to be left, they can produce up to 5 apples from one tree.
The buds are collected in bouquets. There can be several of them on one branch. If you do not intervene in the situation, clusters of apples form on the branch.It will be correct to leave only one branch, on which no more than 2 bouquets should be located. As for the flowers on the trunk, you can’t leave them all either. The number of apples that are planned to be harvested is doubled - and the result is the number of buds that should remain on the tree. An adult apple tree can bring 12 kilograms of such fruits.
At the very beginning of the ovary, you must not forget to thin out. Even fewer bouquets are left on the branches - one for each, and half is also removed again from the trunk. When the first fruits appear, still very small, they should be left 2-3 pieces per bunch. With their size of 4-5 centimeters, it is necessary to leave only one fruit in place of the bouquet. This will help the remaining apples get enough nutrients, grow and ripen more actively.
Each sprout, on which the fruits were located, must be stopped during spring pruning, this procedure is carried out 5 years in a row. At the age of 6, the branch is completely removed, since it has completely exhausted its resources. Due to this, the crown will be pulled up. If the columnar apple tree is properly cared for, it will delight the gardener with its fruits for many years.
When the time comes for the plant to degenerate, it must be cut off, but at the same time a stump 60 centimeters high should remain above the ground. As soon as young shoots appear, the most powerful and strong of them should be fixed at the support, it will serve as the basis of a new tree. The rest are cut off until the plant gets stronger.
Possible mistakes
Even if the pruning was carried out in compliance with all the above rules, it is not always possible to wait for the desired result, as evidenced by the reviews of gardeners.The reason is very simple - possible mistakes made during the procedure can lead to adverse consequences. The effect can be the most deplorable: the drying of the branches, stopping their growth, the absence of fruits on the tree. So that such troubles do not overshadow the joy of getting a harvest, you should adhere to the following points, which gardeners sometimes do not take into account:
- pruning should be done starting from the lower branches, and gradually moving towards the top;
- the cut must be done in the opposite direction from the extreme ovary;
- the location of the cut should be at least 2 centimeters higher than the kidney itself;
- it is necessary to use sharp garden tools to prevent the formation of chipping and unplanned damage to the tree bark;
- in order for the side branches to form correctly, pruning should be done on a kidney.
If you follow all of the above recommendations, the columnar apple tree will thank the gardener with a quality and rich harvest every year.
