Cranberries during pregnancy: benefits and harms, medicinal properties
Cranberry is a wild berry that grows on moist soils, mainly in lowlands, swampy areas, near lakes. The plant chooses coniferous forests and areas where moss grows, as cranberries often creep along the mossy cover. The people love and revere this berry very much, calling it the “queen of the swamps”, “forest healer”, “northern grape”, “spring”.
The use of cranberries by man has been going on for more than one century, and the mention of its miraculous properties has been met since the time of Ancient Rome. In Russia, during military campaigns, the juice of this berry was used to heal wounds, quickly restore strength, and also to fight scurvy.
What is this berry?
Cranberries are most common in the northern latitudes of our continent, from Siberia and the Far East up to the Arctic, but its most favorite habitat is the tundra. These regions are famous for their number of annually growing northern berries. But its size, compared to cranberries growing in Canada or North America, is significantly inferior - there the berries reach up to 20 millimeters in diameter, and our cranberries are much smaller.
Externally, the plant looks like a small bush creeping along the soil cover up to 30 centimeters in height, having a branched structure. The twigs are densely covered with dense oval-shaped leaves that are dark green on the outside and grayish green on the inside of the leaf. The color of the leaves of the plant does not change throughout the year. Flowering in cranberries begins in May, the berries are dark red in color - round or slightly oblong in shape, ripen by autumn.
This is an amazing berry, because you can harvest it three times a year! The first time the berry is harvested in September. During this period, it is strong, not fully ripe, but it will completely reach the required condition at home. The second time, harvesting takes place in November, during the first frosts - then the berry gains useful components as much as possible and has a sour taste. The third wave of cranberry picking takes place in the spring, at a time when the snow cover has not completely melted on the thawed patches. Cranberries overwintered under the snow are considered the highest degree of maturity.
At that time it is rich in vitamins, has a tart sweet taste. It won’t be possible to keep such a berry for a long time - it becomes soft and watery, so you need to start using it as soon as possible.
In order to preserve cranberries for a long time, there are various ways to prepare them. From berries you can make wonderful jam, jam, berry puree with sugar, or simply freeze in the freezer of the refrigerator. In addition, in the old days, cranberries were stored in wooden barrels, filled with water and replaced twice a month.
The dried berry will also retain all the useful substances if it is dried in a dark, ventilated place.

Harm
Given that the berries contain a fairly powerful vitamin and mineral composition, as well as active biocomponents, cranberries are a fairly strong and effective remedy that can be safely called a medicine. And any medicine, including cranberries, has both indications and some contraindications for use.
Contraindications to the use of cranberries during pregnancy are as follows:
- Due to the fact that cranberries contain a large amount of acids, its use can increase the concentration of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. With gastritis with increased secretory gastric function, as well as with heartburn, the use of cranberries is undesirable.
- With peptic ulcer and erosion of the stomach or intestines, the use of cranberries can provoke an exacerbation of the disease.
- Some people have an individual intolerance to one or another product. If indigestion, bloating, upset stool or nausea are noted when using cranberries, it is best to refuse the use of berries.
- An allergic reaction may develop on a sharp introduction of a large amount of cranberries into the body. To prevent this from happening, you should start taking cranberries with small doses, carefully observing the reaction of the body and your well-being. If itching, swelling and other symptoms of allergy develop, cranberry preparations should be discarded. As a rule, it does not contain allergens, but there are even exceptions to the rules.
Given the above contraindications, cranberries should be used with caution, especially during pregnancy.
How to use?
A woman can start using cranberries already in the early stages of pregnancy. In the first trimester, a cranberry drink is taken no more than one liter per day. The reason for this limitation is that berries contain a shock dosage of vitamin C, which can provoke an increase in the tone of the muscles of the uteruswhich will eventually lead to spontaneous miscarriage.
In addition, cranberry juice is best consumed at home, as the drink has a pronounced diuretic effect. Therefore, during trips, it is best for pregnant women to refrain from using the drink.
In later pregnancy, the amount of cranberry drink can be increased to two liters per day.Especially cranberry juice will be useful in the treatment of inflammatory processes in the kidneys or bladder - against the background of the use of cranberries, edema will decrease, and the level of protein in the urine will also decrease. In addition, a drink from this medicinal berry will improve metabolic processes and help neutralize toxins in the body of a pregnant woman, which tend to accumulate due to the increased load on organs and systems in the process of bearing a fetus.
To prepare a tasty, healthy and vitamin-rich drink, juice is squeezed out of the berries. After that, the remaining cake is added to boiling water, where sugar has already been dissolved, and boiled for no more than 3-5 minutes. Next, the drink must be removed from the fire, but the lid is not opened and it is given time to infuse. When the juice has practically cooled down, it is filtered and the juice that was squeezed out in advance is added. Cranberry juice prepared in this way retains all valuable properties and is rich in vitamins.
For the manufacture of fruit drinks, not only fresh berries, but also frozen ones are suitable. It is best to thaw berries in a natural way, without excessive heating with the help of household appliances - this is the only way to preserve their biologically active components.
In addition, cranberries can be consumed by pregnant women in the form of berry puree with sugar or jam. But here it is important to remember about calories. By itself, cranberries are a low-calorie product, but when sugar is added to it, the calorie content of the product increases markedly. Pregnant women should remember this and monitor weight gain so as not to exceed the rate of increase corresponding to the period of fetal development in weeks.
For colds and other illnesses
Sometimes it happens that during pregnancy a woman can become ill with a viral or catarrhal disease. The use of traditional drug therapy in this case is contraindicated due to the undesirable effects of drugs on the fetus. In this case, cranberries will come to the rescue. The use of a drink from these berries will help reduce the temperature and improve the general condition. Against the background of blood thinning, nasal breathing improves, sputum leaves the lungs more easily, pain in the throat disappears.
During cystitis, the cranberry used disinfects the bladder cavity and enhances the outflow of urine. As a result of the use of cranberries, the number of urges to urinate decreases, pain and burning in the urethra disappears, and urine becomes transparent.
With pyelonephritis, a concentrated cranberry drink helps cleanse the kidneys and urinary tract from mucus and bacteria. The number of leukocytes, protein in the urine decreases. The aching pain is gone. Increased diuresis removes excess fluid and improves the overall well-being of a pregnant woman.
When breastfeeding
Most women have long noticed the fact that against the background of the use of drinks and cranberry decoctions, they significantly increase the amount of milk secreted. And although there is no scientific justification for this fact, a fairly large number of doctors advise a nursing mother to use this wild berry. Breastfed babies (BC) get a good weight gain, and the mother always has enough milk during lactation.
However, mothers still should not use cranberries in large quantities. Berries can change the taste of milk itself, and if the baby stops liking it, he will simply refuse to breastfeed.
Often, women have a question about whether it is possible to give cranberries to a newborn child, because the baby also needs vitamins. The opinion of pediatricians on this matter is unequivocal and it boils down to the fact that it is not recommended to give cranberries to a child aged 1 or 2 months. You can use it no earlier than 3 months of age of the child and take no more than 2-3 berries per day for feeding.
How can you cook?
The recipe for making decoctions, compotes or fruit drinks from cranberries is simple and there are many different options. Often cranberries are combined with other berries. You can prepare healing drinks using fresh, dried or frozen berries. In order to soften the sour taste, honey or sugar is added to the drinks.
Here is one of the options for making a drink using cranberries that a woman can drink while breastfeeding:
- fresh berries - 500 grams;
- water - 2000 milliliters;
- honey or sugar are added as desired in the required amount.
Cooking method: cranberries are placed on a gauze napkin and a bundle is made, which is dipped into boiling water. Boil the berry in the bundle for no more than two minutes, and then the bundle must be removed from the container and squeezed. Next, these berries are rubbed through a fine sieve. Berry puree is laid out in a saucepan where the drink is brewed. The resulting composition is boiled for another two minutes and sugar is added to it.
In addition, the berries can be prepared in another way - for this purpose they are crushed with a blender to a puree state, and then sugar is added. You can add cherries, raspberries or currants to cranberry puree, chopping them in the same way as cranberries and mixing all the ingredients. Berry mix is stored in a cool place and consumed with tea, several tablespoons daily.
Drinks and decoctions
The cranberry-lingonberry composition is considered very useful for the kidneys. You can make it in the form of juice, fruit drink, jelly or compote from fresh or frozen berries.Dried cranberries are not taken for this purpose, since they contain less valuable components. Recipes:
- cranberry broth - Pour 20 grams of a mixture of cranberry berries and leaves with half a liter of boiling water and boil over low heat. Cook the composition for at least 10 minutes, then let it brew until completely cooled under the lid and strain. Take half a glass 4 times a day for diarrhea.

It is best to squeeze the juice before preparing the drink, and only then add it to the finished composition. So you save all the useful components of cranberries as much as possible.

Next, remove from heat and leave to infuse until completely cooled. Then boil again for 10 minutes and pour hot into jars. This jam is good to eat with tea to increase immunity.
