Plum "Prunes": description of the variety and features of cultivation

v

A garden plot without fruit trees looks empty. Fruit crops bring comfort and aesthetic appeal to the summer cottage. The real decoration of the site are dense green crowns and delicate flowers in the spring. In addition, it is unforgivable to deprive yourself and loved ones of the pleasure of eating tasty and healthy fruits of various fruit crops. In our article we will talk about the plum variety "Prunes", its features and optimal conditions for growing.

Specificity

This variety was bred by crossing two other types of plums: blackthorn and cherry plum. The variety "Prunes" got its name due to the ability to maintain excellent taste after drying the fruit. This type of plum is the most suitable for harvesting fruits by drying and drying.

Fruits are great for making fruit drinks, in dried form compotes are made from them, added to salads, pastries and meat dishes.

Many gardeners opt for this variety, it has positive reviews. This type of plum is popular due to its drought resistance, frost resistance and relative unpretentiousness. Fruit trees are well adapted to the climate of the middle zone, give regular abundant harvests. The culture is self-fertile.

Variety "Prunes" refers to the middle late.Despite the fact that this variety is not early, the flowering process begins at the same time as the foliage blooms.

External Features

Mature trees of the "Prunes" variety are quite tall. Often they reach a height of 4 meters. During flowering, this plum produces large flower buds. Fruit tree shoots are straight, not long, on average about half a meter. The leaves are dense and thick, have a corrugated structure. The fruits of this culture are large. Their average weight is 40-45 g. On the plums there is a characteristic vertical stripe and a depression next to the stalk. Ripe fruits are round or oval.

The skin of the fruit is dark blue, close to black, in color, thick and rough. The pulp of plums of this variety is very juicy, has a granular structure and a small amount of fibers. The bones are easily removed from the fetus.

Advantages:

  • self-fertility of culture;
  • high and regular yield of fruit trees;
  • unpretentiousness to external conditions and care;
  • the variety tolerates winter well, suitable for the Moscow region and central Russia;
  • fruits and leaves have a strong immunity to fungal infections;
  • The crop has good drought tolerance.

Growing conditions

Planting and caring for fruit trees of the "Prunus" variety do not differ significantly from the process of growing plums of other types. Like most plum crops, "Prunes" develops best in moderately lit places. It is acceptable to plant along buildings or non-deaf fences.

Despite the drought tolerance, for better fruiting and good taste of the crop, the trees must receive enough moisture. With its serious deficiency, the plum will not die, but the pulp of the fruit will significantly lose its juiciness and taste.

Recommended soil characteristics and properties:

  • the soil at the place of planting and growing a tree should be sufficiently loose and soft; heavy clay soils are not recommended;
  • it is desirable to periodically carry out loosening in the root zone of the seedling in the first years of development, this will contribute to the access of oxygen to the root system;
  • plum does not like soil with high acidity, in such soil its roots develop much more slowly, which affects the rate of development of the whole tree and its fruiting.

Plum trees are not recommended to be planted in low-lying and shady places. During the day, the plant should receive enough sunlight.

    The culture will not develop well in areas where groundwater passes in large quantities. Do not plant a plum tree in open areas with regular strong winds or drafts. In the winter months, such factors greatly weaken the plant.

    Planting seedlings

    Planting young plants in the ground is most favorable in the first months of spring, after the snow melts and the soil thaws. In the middle lane, it is better to land no later than mid-April. A pit for a seedling is prepared in advance, in the fall or a few weeks before planting.

    Well preparation

    The best option is to prepare the pit in late autumn. In this case, much more nutrient humus can form there. In addition, the soil will have time to be loosened by earthworms and become more uniform.

    • After the autumn digging of the soil, removal of weeds and harvesting of fallen leaves, a hole is dug in the place intended for planting. The depth of the hole for the seedling should be about half a meter, the diameter is about 60-70 cm. If clay prevails in the soil, the hole should be deepened to 0.7 m.
    • Add 2-3 buckets of organic fertilizer to the bottom of the planting hole. It can be a mixture of humus, compost, stove ash, manure. Organics are mixed with soil in a ratio of 2: 1. A small layer of surface soil is sprinkled on top of the pit. You can insulate the hole with a covering material or spruce branches so that the process of decay is more intense.
    • Seedlings are planted in such a way that the distance between rows is at least 3 meters. In a row, trees should be located at a distance of 2.5-3 meters from each other.
    • Planting is best done with two people. One person must hold the seedling at the right height so as not to sprinkle the neck, the second person will powder the root system and compact the soil. The root neck after complete instillation should remain at a height of 3-5 cm from the soil.
    • Planted seedlings should be watered regularly and plentifully, as well as fed in the first 3-4 years. Young plum trees begin to bear fruit in the 4th year after planting in the main place.

    Care instructions

    It is important to know the following.

    • Plum trees give intensive basal shoots. It should be uprooted or cut down at least 4 times per season. Young sprouts significantly weaken the development of the tree, deplete the root system. This ultimately leads to a decrease in fruiting.
    • During the active formation of ovaries, the root zone of the plant should be loosened regularly. It is important to ensure systematic watering during this period. Such measures will positively affect the quantity and quality of the autumn harvest.
    • About a month before ripening and harvesting fruits, it is recommended to stop watering the trees.
    • After harvesting the main crop, excess plums should be removed from under the tree. Fruit should not be allowed to rot in the soil.This process is fraught with the development of pest microorganisms, fungal diseases of the fruit crop.

    Preparation of dried fruits

    Since the variety "Prunes" is excellent for drying and harvesting its fruits, you should touch a little on the topic of preparing prunes for storage.

    Description of the process of drying plum fruits.

    • For drying and obtaining prunes, ripe fruits are selected without signs of rotting or insect damage.
    • Plums are well washed in water, sorted by size.
    • Next, the fruits are doused with boiling water. Additionally, it is recommended to dip the plums in a one percent solution of caustic soda for 20-30 seconds. This is done in order to get rid of the thin layer of wax on the skin of the fruit. However, drying is acceptable without this procedure.
    • Drying of processed plums can be done in the sun, in an oven or in special electric drying cabinets. This process is carried out at a temperature of about 50°C for several hours. All this time, it is necessary to visually monitor the condition of the fruit in order to prevent overdrying.

    The pulp of the finished prunes is significantly reduced in volume, but remains soft and fleshy. It should easily separate from the bone.
