Strawberry "Alexandria": description of the variety and features of cultivation
One of the best remontant varieties of strawberries is "Alexandria". Its berries have an excellent rich taste, and many other plants can envy frost resistance.
Story
This culture is also called small-fruited strawberries. The seeds of this variety were bred in 1964 by the Park Seed company, that is, more than 50 years ago, and this strawberry is still known and popular.
Description
"Alexandria" is a remontant beardless strawberry variety. Fruiting begins in June and ends in October-November. In one season, you can collect up to 500 grams of berries from one plant.
You can distinguish this variety from others by the following characteristics.
- The bushes of such strawberries are very powerful, semi-spreading, with a large amount of foliage. Plant height ranges from 30 to 35 centimeters.
- The leaves are green, with small incisors along the edges. Mustaches are absent. The flowers are small and white, they are located on tall and thin legs.
- The fruits of "Alexandria" are cone-shaped. The berries are quite large, their weight can reach 15 grams. They have an elongated shape with a pointed top. Strawberries have a shiny red skin with small seeds. The taste of berries is quite pleasant, tart.
Fruits are distinguished by their versatility - they can be consumed both fresh and frozen. They make excellent jam and delicious compote.
When planting "Alexandria", you can collect the first berries in one and a half to two months. If all the rules for care are carefully observed, then the plant can bring from 800 to 1100 berries. Fruiting can occur up to three to four years from the moment of planting, after which the bushes must be changed. Due to the small size of the Alexandria bushes, the plant can be grown on a windowsill or balcony. It will take two to three months for the full formation of all flowers and ovaries.
It should be noted the extreme unpretentiousness of the variety and excellent resistance to various diseases.
Pros and cons of the variety
The undoubted advantages include the following.
- A bountiful harvest. As mentioned earlier, with proper care, strawberries are able to bear fruit very generously.
- plant compactness. The small size of the bush allows you to grow it right on the windowsill, which is a big plus for those who do not have their own garden plot.
- Delicious berries. They are distinguished by excellent taste and quality, but this can only be achieved with conscientious care.
- Long fruiting. Ripening of berries occurs in a rather extended period of time, which allows you to enjoy such strawberries for a long time.
- High disease resistance.
- Excellent transportability. This property allows the product to be transported over long distances without damaging it.
The only downside is the high price. Due to the fact that the variety is very popular, the price has increased several times.
Features of agricultural technology
The most popular method of cultivation is considered to be growing from seeds, and the seed can be obtained independently. To do this, you need to select the most ripe berries and cut off the top layer from them. The main thing is that there are bones in this layer. The resulting material must be dried and ground.
If the gardener has a greenhouse on the site, then the seeds should be sown in the summer. If we are talking about sowing in an open area, then you need to sow "Alexandria" before winter. With the onset of the first frost, the plants should be covered. During wintering, the process of stratification of seeds under the snow cover will occur, which will greatly facilitate the further development of the plant.
In the last days of January or in the first days of February, the seeds should be prepared for sowing. This is done through hardening.
It is very important to prepare the substrate in advance, made from humus, garden soil and sand. The soil should be watered with preparations such as "Fundazol" or "Fitosporin".
Spread the seeds of "Alexandria" on a damp cloth, after which it should be rolled up and placed in a plastic bag. It must be put in the refrigerator for 12-14 days. After this time, the napkin is taken out, and the seeds are laid out on the substrate. All this is placed in a container and stored in a place where the temperature is not higher than 22 degrees.
Germination of seeds from the moment of sowing occurs in three to four weeks. All this time, the plants must be carefully looked after according to the following scheme.
- Thin sprouts require highlighting with a phytolamp. This should be done before two o'clock in the afternoon.
- In order for the bushes to become stronger, they should be sprinkled with the substrate, which was mentioned earlier.
- Watering is required to be carried out regularly and only with warm water.
- From the moment two or three formed leaves grow, the bushes must dive into separate pots.
- Fourteen days after picking, seedlings of Alexandria strawberries should be fed with special fertilizers.Gumi-20M Rich is perfect, or any other top dressing containing Fitosporin-M. This substance can prevent the development of fungal diseases.
- As soon as five or six leaves appear, the bushes must be transplanted a second time. The landing site can be a balcony or a separate area.
- Before planting in a permanent place, seedlings should be hardened off. To do this, gradually leave it in the fresh air.
- The following symptom may indicate a lack of light: the leaves of the plant begin to turn in the other direction. In this case, strawberries should be transplanted to a more illuminated area.
- Landing in open ground.
It should be noted that the place should be sunny. To the soil you need to mix a little humus and four hundred grams of wood ash per hole. The best way to grow is considered to be a two-row placement of bushes in a garden bed, the width of which should be at least 1.1 meters. Between such rows, the interval is half a meter, and the size of the holes should be 25x25x25 centimeters.
It's important to know that the very first flower stalks must be removed - this will allow the plant to get stronger. On average, there should be five flower stalks with five berries each. In the second year after planting, about twenty peduncles are formed on the bushes. In August, absolutely all reddened leaves must be removed.
The mulching process is also important. It should be carried out only after the soil in the garden is compacted. To create organic mulch, you need to take straw, sawdust, peat or needles. The selected material should be shed with water - this will not allow it to collect moisture from the soil. After two to three months, the mulch should be replaced with fresh one.
Mulching can also occur with the help of a film or agrotextile. The material used should be carefully placed on the bed and cut in places where the pits are. This method will help prevent the emergence of weeds. However, this method should not be used during heavy rains, as this can cause rot to form.
The soil must be regularly loosened and treated for weeds. Thanks to loosening, the soil will have a constant supply of oxygen. Before the berries begin to ripen, loosen the soil should be at least three times. And when fruiting, this is not necessary.
Watering
Since the landing of "Alexandria" it should be watered about two to three times a week. The water must be warm. At the time of formation of young leaves, strawberries should be watered no more than once a week. It is worth remembering that this variety does not tolerate excessive moisture. In addition, watering must be correlated with weather conditions.
top dressing
This variety of strawberries must be fertilized with a solution of humus or bird droppings. The proportions here are 1: 15. This procedure should be done from the moment the ovaries are formed. Fertilizers can be purchased at the store. "Baikal", "BakSib" or "Vostok" are perfect.
Disease and pest control
As mentioned earlier, Alexandria strawberries are very resistant to fungal diseases. However, in case of infection, the plant should be treated after harvest with fungicides.
You can protect strawberries from pests with the help of spring tillage. For this process, Bordeaux liquid or a solution of copper sulfate is used. In the case of using vitriol, the soil should be sprayed as carefully as possible, without falling on the plant itself.
Growing in pots
For seedlings of this variety, containers with a diameter of twelve to twenty centimeters are perfect. They must have a pallet. It is necessary to water the plant twice a day - in the morning and in the evening. So the soil does not dry out. Do not forget about loosening the soil. This should be done several times a week with a small stick.
Reproduction methods
This variety can be propagated only with the help of seeds or by dividing the bush. In the third or fourth year of the plant's life, it should be dug up and divided. It is necessary to plant in the same way as ordinary seedlings.
Reviews of gardeners
According to most reviews left on the Internet, small-fruited strawberries "Alexandria" is a rather unpretentious and disease-resistant variety. It is perfect for growing on the balcony - it is quite easy to care for it.
However, many gardeners complain about a small harvest, but, nevertheless, the taste of the berries is still excellent.
Strawberry "Alexandria" is an excellent variety that does not require any special care in relation to itself. But certain rules of agricultural technology should be observed both when growing on the site and on the balcony, only in this case the berries will be able to grow truly high-quality and tasty.
