Strawberry leaf beetle: causes and control measures

Strawberries are considered by many to be a tasty and healthy berry, therefore they are grown on their own plots. In the warm season, the berry bush is in danger in the form of various harmful insects and parasites. The strawberry leaf beetle is an insect that loves to feast on a garden plant, while harming strawberries.

Description of the parasite

The strawberry leaf beetle is a fairly common parasite that destroys not only strawberry plantations in household plots, but also wild berries. Mature beetles reach a length of up to 0.04 cm, they have a brownish-yellow color and a black abdomen. Insect eggs are ball-shaped and 0.6 millimeters in size; they are laid by females. Each female insect is capable of laying up to two hundred eggs. Leaf beetle larvae are yellow-brown in color with a size of 0.05 cm.

Newborn insects skiplete foliage, and later pupate. The body of the larvae is covered with dark stripes and warts. Wintering occurs only in mature individuals. They can be recognized by their black legs and head of the same color. Often the larvae find shelter under leaves that have fallen off in autumn. In the spring, they fly and actively feed. The location of the larvae is concentrated on the back side of the foliage.

Signs of an attack

If the strawberry parasite multiplies en masse, then this entails the infection of entire plantations of the berry plantation, which subsequently dies. Each gardener will be able to recognize the attack of a strawberry leaf beetle on a plant by signs such as:

  • a huge number of holes on the leaves;
  • the presence of wilted and yellow foliage;
  • poorly developed and small fruits;
  • change in the taste of the berry.

This pest actively feeds on leaf pulp throughout the entire growing season. The most active activity of the strawberry mite is manifested during the flowering and maturation of the plant. Juicy foliage is eaten by both young and adult individuals of the parasite. After identifying the insect, it is necessary to take control measures that will save the crop.

Folk remedies

Strawberry leaf beetle can be dealt with with proven folk remedies. It is considered effective to carry out alternate spraying with decoctions of herbs of wormwood, dandelion, garlic. Soap shavings in these solutions will only enhance the effect of insect destruction. The aisle can be sprinkled with tobacco dust or tree ash. A good effect is observed after spraying with a solution based on ash and soap.

Many gardeners recommend sprinkling plants with dry mustard in the amount of two hundred grams per square meter of territory. A good effect is the processing of strawberries with slaked lime, which needs thirty grams per square meter. Glue traps are often set between the bushes.

Chemical and biological preparations

In the spring, when young foliage grows on the berry bush, it is necessary to spray the strawberries with chemical or biological preparations.If the need arises and the number of insects on strawberries increases, repeated spraying can be carried out in the period before the plant blooms or after picking the berries. It is worth paying attention to the following effective chemicals for spraying:

  • Karbofos used in dissolved form, for this it is necessary to dilute twenty-five grams of the drug in ten liters of water;
  • "Aktellik" it is worth dissolving in water, a bucket of water will require twenty grams of the substance; this preparation is used for spraying in calm weather and without precipitation;
  • "Bancol" is an insecticide that is in the form of a wettable powder;
  • "Decis" - This is an insecticide based on deltamethrin, one gram of the substance is diluted in ten liters of water.

Do not forget that the location of the larvae is concentrated at the bottom, so the surface treatment must be thorough. Of the biological preparations, the most popular are Agravertin, Aktofit, Fitoverm, Vertimek.

Agrotechnological and mechanical methods

Proper agricultural technology will protect strawberry plantations from leaf beetles. In order to get a good and healthy harvest in the autumn, it is necessary to dig the ground deep and harrow it in the spring. A mandatory procedure is the disposal of plant residues after the crop has been harvested. Weeds must be destroyed in a timely manner during the period of growth and ripening of berries. In June, it would be advisable to loosen the soil to a depth of fifteen centimeters.

Gardeners recommend collecting larvae and adults of the strawberry leaf beetle with your hands. A good effect is given by flushing the insect with a powerful water jet from under the hose. And also the parasite is afraid of watering with soapy water from a watering can.The strawberry leaf beetle is a small and poorly visible beetle that can cause tremendous damage to strawberries. In order to get rid of its adults and larvae, there are many effective ways. The main thing is to detect the pest in time and not be lazy to carry out preventive protection measures.
